Bicycling into the Future

Dear Yogis Around the World,

I write as a concerned yogi that shares the planet with you.  It is up to us, you and me, and our friends, to choose environmentally sound modes of transportation and fuel.  We can reduce the miles driven in fossil-fueled cars in order to ensure that all of the organisms that we share Earth with can thrive in the coming decades and centuries.  We are at a tipping point that doesn’t require terribly in depth research to understand the consequences of for yourself and all living creatures.  At the tipping point, every decision is crucial.  Empower yourself with tools of activity that slow down climate chaos!  One solution out of many?  Ride a bike or walk instead of sitting in the car.  Not only does your fuel switch from petroleum to your yummy breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, but you are also pumping your heart, moving your body in an era of sedentary lifestyles, thereby preventing chronic mental, physical and emotional illnesses!  Let’s bike our way into the futures of sloths, tigers, and toucans and humanity!

A life-changing practice of gratitude

As I prepare to teach a 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training, I am reflecting back on thge most life-changing practices that I learned.  A daily gratitude journal is one of the things that I include everyday.  It began as written and now, it’s more of a mental check.  When beginning a practice of gratitude, its great to actually write it down, as this makes it physical and official.  As you make this a habit, you will find more and more things to be grateful for – I promise!  According to BKS Iyengar, our minds are shaped by our thoughts, so a thought of gratitude a day can turn your mind into a grateful one that finds more and more to be thankful for.  Start jotting down one to three things you are grateful for each day and feel free to comment below on this post about the difference it makes emotionally and mentally after a few weeks! It’s fun to keep them all together by pasting them to a poster or to write them all in a little journal so that you can go back and read them later and remember what you have enjoyed in your life.

This afternoon, I am grateful for clouds to clear allowing the sun to light up the Milwaukee skies.

I am also grateful at each meal for the amazing, usually spicy and always fresh food that my partner and I cook up and get to enjoy.
